Turn on your Electricity

If you already have an account with ConEd, you can log on to your account and simply click on the Manage My Account tab on the top left and then Transfer Service on the bottom, below your account number.

If you don't have an account yet,                        to go to the ConEdison webpage. When you're on the home screen, click Log In or Register on the top right corner. The registration process is really easy and you can set everything up from the comfort of your computer. If your meter is located inside your apartment, ConEd will need to schedule a time to come in and turn on the electricity but other than that, you're good to go!

Change Mailing Address

Changing your mailing address used to mean going to the post office and filing out their paperwork, but did you know that you can now do it all online?                       to visit USPS.com and change your address!

Purchase Renters Insurance

There are always things that happen beyond our control. Without renter's insurance, tenants leave themselves and their belongings unprotected in the event items are stolen or damaged. But what exactly is renters insurance and what does it cover?

What is Renters Insurance

Simply put, renters insurance covers damage to your stuff and living expenses in case your apartment is damaged to the point of becoming uninhabitable, and covers liability in case anyone gets hurt in your home.

What Does It Cover?

Renters insurance will cover the things you own. It won't cover the apartment itself, that's the owner's responsibility. Make sure you remember that different policies covers different categories of possessions. But most insurance providers cover damage from events like fire, smoke, lightning, windstorm, theft and water damage but not floods or earthquakes.

Do I Have To Have Renters Insurance?

New York City law requires landlords to maintain insurance on the dwelling itself, but while tenants are not required by law to have renters insurance, many landlords to require you to show proof that you are a policy holder before a lease is signed, since your owner's insurance doesn't cover your belongings. Also keep in mind that if you have a roommate who has renters insurance, their policy won't cover your things.

How Much Does It Cost?

Cost can vary depending on where you take out a policy and what type of policy you take out so I suggest researching and shopping around. Most policies are incredibly affordable, and are usually under $10 a month which is much cheaper than having to buy new things in the event of damage or loss!

Change Address on Other Accounts

Lastly, make sure you change the address on all your other accounts you may get bills from:

 

  • Bank accounts/Credit card accounts

  • Student loan accounts

  • Storage facilities

  • 401K accounts

  • Cell phone accounts

And last but certainly not least, make sure you let your HR department know your new address too!
